Not sure I agree with you D.   The gaze is really what it's all about, and very charming it is too. There are photos which are obviously intended as stand alone creative works, artistic nudes for example, and others which are more concerned with catching moments. In my opinion, this shot fulfils its purpose fully and succesfully at that.

I have to agree with John, the gaze is fine. There is a bit of mystery in what she is looking at. I also love the lighting and the shadows that result. I think the hair is OK as is but having it fall over the far side of her head might have been better.

I would agree that the gaze is what this picture is about.  Compositionally though, it does not work.  Look at the picture for a couple of minutes keeping track of where your eyes take you.  Mine spend 90% of their time in the space between the face and the left margin.  I define that as the active viewer space.  The part from her head to the right margin in the inactive viewer space.  I define a good composition as the image that has a large amount of active viewer space compared to the inactive.  This image does not have a good ratio.

 Another way of looking at this is to ask what the story is.  What story does the image tell?  It is not at all clear.  If a puppy was just beyond her left or a young child or a lover on his knees looking back there are three completely different stories.  How about if it is a tray with breakfast?  How about a jewellry box with a giant diamond ring?  The story is ambiguous and as such it is not successful. 

Furthermore the one element that might draw attention on the right is the tattoo which is not apparently related to the fact that her eyes are drawn to some mystery.
