John Peri 1,032 Posted November 11, 2010 I am not Mapplethorpe nor do I see any resemblance in this photo to his work. For those that are not familiar with his output, Mapplethope was a homosexual, ani-Christian bigot with a chip on his shoulder who depicted art through immersing crucifixes in urine. I would no more emulate his work than I would imagine desecrating the Star of David or the Crescent and Moon, and I resent the comparison.I found the observation interesting before any mention of his name was made, though the similarity if any to the crucifix and Christ was not intended. This is nothing more than a beautiful young lady posing gracefully by the door. I have photographed others frequently in the same situation wearing both the other symbols mentioned. I don't think Mapplethorpe would have been interested in doing anything of the sort. Link to comment
myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted November 11, 2010 You took my comment out of context and went ballistic as I am going to do now. Return and read the whole thread:.....suggests to me...interesting observation... crucifixtion, somthing mapplethorpe might have done. ...Since you cannot understand I will fill in the blanks... The photo suggests to me a crucifiction. Interesting Observation Meir. Yeah John, a crucifiction is something Mappelthorpe might have done. I'm not defending my comment. Its just that you pissed me off. On the rest. You really gave Robert boy a bad rap. (no I'm not gay, pretty revolting to me) "For those that are not familiar with blah blah, gay yes, he died of aids; I don't know if he was a bigot (how can a gay be a bigot?), but has nothing to do with his art. What about Truman Capote or Mel Gibson? Mapplethorpe is considered one of the greatest photographers (and infamous) of our time: classic nudes, flowers, especially, orchads and lillies, portraits of celebrities. His book "Some Women" etc, etc -not just male erotic. The Mappelthorpe Foundation has a whole portfolio on his flowers. ....A comment was once made.... yes it is a penis but is it art? I see close ups of viginas on photo.net and they aren't even fucking art. As for "piss christ" That was done by Andres Serrano (appeared in a joint show) who said "this work is not intended to denounce religion, it alludes to a perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture." By the way If you hung the koran or mohammed on your girl here you'd go to prison if you lived that long. Link to comment
John Peri 1,032 Posted November 12, 2010 Meir, not getting pissed off is what allows one to remain objective.A bigot is someone that shows intolerance and prejudice, a subject we are all familiar with and condemn, yet are capable of at the same time. Throughout his adult life, Mapplethorpe expressed his bigotry toward Catholicism. Without doubt, I stand corrected. It was Serrano that produced the image in question that was displayed at an exhibition by Mapplethorpe in 89 http://www.angrywhiteboy.org/index.php/tag/robert-mapplethorpe-andres-serrano/ . But other than by association with Serrano, I know of no other work by Mapplethorpe depicting a crucifix and do not understand therefore your analogy beyond this event, though I may be wrong ?Whatever the intended impact of the work claimed by the author, I continue to deplore that my photo above could be associated in any manner with persons capable of this act, as I am certain you and others would be also with regards to your own personal "truth", of which we all claim to be the sole possessor. Had you referred to the crucifix painted by Salvador Dali, ref. to your initial statement, I would have continued to express "interest". There is no vulgarity or offense attached to this work.I do not want to eternalize this discussion under the photo of a charming girl, it just doesn't have its place here. I found your comparison inelegant, incomprehensible and I said so, no less no more. We are here not only to express our views but to exchange them. Link to comment
