sprouty 0 Posted November 9, 2003 I'm not sure how you assess soul from an image posted on the Internet but I do know that I like this image a lot better. It draws your attention to the eyes and face using DOF rather than a tight crop and is much more engaging. Link to comment
daniel_rice 0 Posted November 9, 2003 Eye catching photo. In being eye catching the photo suceeds. I don't think the image shows character or anything about the animal other than the dog was able to stay still long enough for this wonderful shot. Link to comment
stephanie_oswald 0 Posted November 9, 2003 Mmh...how would I put it...I hate this photo. I find it tacky, ugly, and...dead. The absence of life in this shot makes it really ugly for me. I would much rather see the photo of a dof playing in the forest. Dogs are no models. Now the technical questions about the eyes or the light are for me pointless as the "basis" of the photo is bad. Nevertheless, I want to congratulate Mr Levant for his success on his site, apparently many people like this type of pics, cool for him. Link to comment
dennisdixson 0 Posted November 10, 2003 Snout, snout, let it all out. These are the things I can do without. Come on, I´m talking to you, come on. Snout, snout, let it all out... Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted November 10, 2003 Dull and uninspiring - the dog appears stuffed & lifeless. The depth of field is too shallow, with the distant brow out of focus - which doesn't work with the flat shapeless lighting & two-dimensional composition. Black featureless background in the top left hand corner unbalances the composition. Link to comment
saul_slowik 0 Posted November 10, 2003 I think this is a wonderful photograph. The depth of field is spot on for what you are trying to achieve with this photo. I think it gives this regal beast a certain softness and it warms up the picture. Good job! Link to comment
gisle_eiken_s_vengen 0 Posted November 10, 2003 well darren, i won't answer any of the elves' questions, i just wanted to say that this is just like taking on my glasses in the morning. if you use glasses, you know what i mean. the picture is so crisp.. its unreal. great! Link to comment
giles_denham 0 Posted November 14, 2003 Contrast to detail very catching! Feeling expression with this one. Well done! Link to comment
nikki_mcdonald 0 Posted November 29, 2003 This is without a doubt a wonderful photograph. I'm a wee young amateur photographer and time and time again I see POW's that look like they have been created on the PC. This is not a critisim as this is an art within itself, I just find it intimidating. This picture is the sort I could attempt myself without the aid of a PC. Wouldn't be half as good but I would have fun trying. In the photo description they asked if this photo showed us any emotion or character of the dog itself. Honestly, I don't think it does, but it doesn't need to. I subscribe to a photography magazine and they are always saying how portraits should show who the person is etc. I don't think this is the case at all. If you think I'm wrong, sorry. Basically, I love animals and I love this picture. Its enchanting. Link to comment
david_graham2 0 Posted December 5, 2003 I especially like the skillful use of the distant limit of the depth of focus to assure the entire left (near) side of face was crisply focused and beyond the facial midline the detail fell gently out-of-focus. Was the close cropping at the end of the muzzle and chin by intent or a necessity of the original camera framing? I'm not sure I like it that close...but I'm not sure it isn't exactly what this superb portrait demands! How's that for mugwumping ? Great image! Handsome dog! aaron emanuel litvinoff 0 Posted March 22, 2004 Beautiful picture, excellent lighting and intelligent application of colour. I have one criticism, although this is of course a matter of taste; i personally would not have used the DOF to create the effect of the canine's right eye being out of focus, for one of the main attractions of this photograph to myself is the amount of fine detail. However, some other people appear to like it! Link to comment
maria_di_liegro 0 Posted May 5, 2004 This is the most captivating dog photos I've even seen. I would take a guess that you're a dog lover, simply by looking at this photo. Love it! Link to comment

chris_merk 0 Posted November 21, 2004 Ok, so we take a common, everyday subject and hold an expensive camera up to it, big deal? I do not see the mass appeal with this picture. Link to comment
