I was actually going to say just the opposite when it came to depth of field. I find the woman in the background with that outrageous hat to be distracting. The depth of field should be such as to throw her and that hat out of focus.

Also, the sun on the top of her head and chest causes blown out highlights. Stopping down a stop and using fill flash, letting it contribute maybe 50% to the exposure will take care of situations like that.

Scott...now that is a more pleasing result.The woman beside is no longer prominent & her sun highlights appear less.  Thanks for the advice.   John

I certainly agree about less depth of field, but I want to point out that you have lighting-exposure problems.  You have overexposed the highlights on the principle subject's skin in order to get the shadows illuminated.  Better would have been to do a histogram "expose to the right"  of the highlights and use a fill flash for the shadows. Or a reflector.  Or massive adjustments in post processing.
