The warm low contrast back lighting can take a lot of credit for the success of this one.  I think you did the best you could under the circumstances.  I take it you were hand holding the camera.  Even if it had image stabilization there is evidence of camera shake.  I offer my take on this one.  I've leveled the horizon line, toned down the pilings, burned the hot spots on the feathers a bit, brightened his eye (your call as to whether I over did it) and sharpened the result a tad.  One thing about this site is that there is no limit to the advice you will get,  some of it worth what you are paying for it.  :-)  Best, LM.
