It is risky to post this shot in with the brilliantly colored landscapes

that are being shown but sometimes cool and soothing works.

I agree with the others, it's a nice change of pace to have something with muted tones.  I like that you've left some space on the left, giving the boat some room, many would have composed the subject in the center of the frame and I applaud you for resisting that temptation... this is better.

My only criticism would be your horizon (which dips on the left) and to some degree, your composition.  I think that you've balanced the composition nicely but I would prefer seeing the larger portion of the frame given to the mountains rather than the sea... there is a lot of dead space at the bottom of this.  Including more of the mountains would add grandeur to the scene.

Either way, it's a nicely exposed and presented photograph (with the exception of the horizon which drives me nuts :)

Excellant job of coaching me on this photo. I have tried different crops to decrease the amount of water but without more mountain the boat overwhelms the shot and I want it to appear small and vulnerable. Thank you. Take care, Deanna BTW I straightened the horizion on my origional to save your sanity.

Thank you for seeing the cool and hazy look of this shot. No p.p effects needed on this one because it really was. Take care, Deanna

Thanks for the comfirmation. It is interesting to put a photo out for critique that you like but isn't the popular technique being shown at the time. Take care, Deanna

Dark, brooding, fog-enveloped mountains can be just as attractive as a field of flowers at sunrise.  Different perhaps, but no less beautiful.  Whether you point the camera up or down, it's the sharp outline of the boat (with a touch of red and white) that will stand out.  Personally, I'd rather have the mist-shrouded mountains as the backdrop (more mystery, greater interest), but agree that you can't crop it to make it so; that might be the shot you take next time.  Another point about composition, I'd suggest that you have the ship a bit more to the right in the photo so that it is moving into the frame; any space behind the boat is also relatively dead.  So compositionally, the ship placed in the lower right 1/3 (instead of the upper center 1/3) might be the most aesthetically eye-catching.

Thank you for taking time to do a detailed critique of this photo. I liked the contrast of the boat with all the gray but needed the instruction on composition. This was very helpful. Take care, Deanna
