And has the inbuilt flash made too much contrast?

It would have been bettre if you could have isolated these flowers from the rest of the background. Try getting in closer with a macro lens or extension tubes. For me the dark background has too much going on in it. Try again from below the folowrs and see what you come up with.

This is COOOL. I wish I had taken it. The background is PERFECT. So much more interesting than an "isolated macro". Please don't buy a feature-laden SLR and a bushel of gadgets.

I think your flowers are beautifull & you have a nice angle on the shot. Maybe croping out the surrounding bricks & stuff will make it more dramatic.

I disagree, the surrounding brickwork makes a nice contrast to the flowers. Cropping too close would lose impact and make it just another flower shot.

 

Maybe moving more to the underneath of the flowers would improve it and use a tripod to take a longer exposure so the flowers are backlit.

 

Don't lose the bricks though.
