You might also try focusing on just a small portion of the sewing machine.  Get so close that you can't even recognize what it is anymore.  I'm thinking the needle assembly might be a good place to start.

hi, the composition is fairly static - by which I mean it does not really flow: you start bottom left on the camera with the machine background then you kinda wrench your eyes right to see what the object is over there (maybe also change it so it is more visible), so I don't feel lead through the shot.

The lighting is quite flat, which is good on occasion, but in this instance is tending to blend the machine in to the back ground and make the whole thing a little dull.

So I would work on the arrangement a bit - there are some good leading lines to make use of, and the lighting also.
