Approach to Achill Head

hank_hanacek

Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 lens. On approach to this popular tourist mecca (closest point of land in Rep. of Ireland to North America), we pulled over to admire this gorgeous view.

Now this is a spot I know very well. I am looking at the layout of the road and am surprised at the exposure date: was it really like that in 1972? I thought this layout was much more recent. Something else that surprises me and makes me think: well maybe 1972 after all: The water is clearer than I remember seeing it here! On the photo as a photo: I am puzzled by the grey tone. Maybe it's not the best of days! Anyhow, it's a place I love. Did you try climbing the hills beyond the beach? There is the most fabulous cliff walk out towards Achill Head (I never dared go all the way!) with views back, landward, towards the highest sea-cliffs in Europe (by some accounts): the mountain, Cruchaun, is eaten away almost to its 2,000 ft. summit by the sea. The cliffs are not perpendicular, but they are spectacular!
