Thanks Tobias, I like seeing variations of my work and appreciate the time you've spent...

the details you've talked of interest me very much, I'll freely admit that I'm somewhat of a beginner when it comes to ps and here's what I was thinking...

While I did notice the ear and lip details, I have been trying to apply colour adjustments to the entire image only, and limit small touchups with the idea that this will force me to pay more attention to these details while shooting...

The idea being that I want to be a better photographer, not a better photoshop artist...but of course good at both is where I'd like to be...

The link works fine here, there are some issues with certain browsers because of the port configuration on that server...I'll look for a better solution asap

Thanks to all who have pointed to ways to improve this image...in this version I have tried to keep the qualities that I liked in the posted version while retaining it's photographic quality...

Tobias you hit the nail on the head...I reconverted the raw file using breezebrowser for +1 stop exposure and used the white point tool to correct the colour...

Then I ran the file through the same basic layers setup as before and this is what I got.

Frankly I'm amazed at the difference, and the view seems a little clearer from the few steps up the mountain I climbed tonight...

I do have a question to ask now...I have photoshop set to Adobe RGB (1998) and it seems that when saving as a jpg the image loses some of it's colour...If I change the working space to sRGB the working image colours in photoshop then match the saved jpg...

How do I save a jpg from the Adobe RGB space that matches ? Or is my thinking out of whack on this ?

By using "Convert to profile" with source "Adobe RGB" and destination "sRGB".

PS: I think the original is the best; the last two are run-of-the-mill interpretations.

The issue is not only about which color space is wider; it is also about how to get your pictures to look right in an application that does not recognize profiles (e.g., the ubiquitous Internet Explorer). In that case, one must convert to a profile that is closest in parameters to that of an average monitor, and that happens to be sRGB for PC users.

I think Stephen's interpretation (the last picture) is the most ordinary, regarding its tonality and palette. It's the "natural" choice for most people. The first one shows more artistic licence. My current thinking is that impressionism should be encouraged when it works, and here it does. I am merely expressing my preference... and it changes over time.

Nice soft look, but you skin blurring might be too pronouced as you said. Try to reduce it and add a little noise to the blurred area (around 0.6% of gaussion noise). Try it! That's what I'm usually doing, and the result is way more realistic. Hope this helps :)

I like the soft skin in terms of focus and tone. I feel the eyes need more light on them. I don't think I care for the shirt strap on the shoulder, it seems to detract from the simplicity of the image.

Fine, fine, excellent work, I bow. It works very well in all aspects, I like the shape, curves, lines of the hair, face, shoulder. Bravo.
