Hi Kezia, you have captured amazing detail.  I would guess that some correctly would say that there are some highlights above.  Still, we have friends who know the GUC very well so I have forwarded the link on to them.  It is an enduring and marvellous piece of technology.   You should persevere and keep as memories and perhaps more.  Well done !

You are right in suggesting that there is some lost detail in the highlights, but the sunlight was so warm on the brickwork and the detail of the lock too important to lose, so I didn't want to wait until there was less contrast. This one is taken near Northchurch, Herts.

The lock is a low one, only five or six feet high.  This location is presumably only a short drive north from Berkhamsted.  Am told that the lock number would be visible to the top of the bridge.  You might have cropped it off.  Your photo is a piece of the culture and history of this place.  Has anyone ever done it better -  I doubt it !

I think the number was immediately above the first row of bricks. If I look hard enough I believe I can see the marks where it went, but I may be imagining it. I guess someone wanted a trophy! I think it is bridge 139.
