This is a lovely shot, Jeff. The artistic merits of the shot, the sharpness, the color fidelity, the composition, all speak for themselves, but the idea itself, the invasion of the wilderness by the modern contraptions of man, that makes this shot work, IMO. This reminds me of the biography of Walker Evans where he tried to go back and photograph Philadelphia with a romantic idea of the city as representing the history and ideal of America, only to find that in every shot, the ubiquitous electric and cable wires interrupted his fantasy and reminded him of the stark reality of the modern city life in the early 20th century.

Nice stuff.

I couldn't agree more with Emmanuel. Plus the absolute beautiful colors and the intersecting line between the whispy blue and the coarse green really gives the shot some contrast beyond man v. god (or nature).

Emmanuel: Thanks for a wonderful review on this photo. You summed up the main idea I was trying to convey, namely the intrusion of humans and modernity. I thought of Michelangelo's depiction of God and Adam touching fingers, well almost, and then I thought of where things have progressed since then.

Bob: There's an older shot entitled "An Encounter on Horeb" that offers an alternate take on this terrain, only without the ski lift. Thanks for noticing the colors.

Everywhere the beauty and great colors and form of nature has to be " broken" by man's signs.. I remember traveling some years ago in New England in the fall , when all the trees are turning to a celebration of colors, what was so disturbing was the electric lines all over.....

Drew: Thanks so much.

Pnina: This was taken in New Mexico--Sandia Peak (sandia means "watermelon" in Spanish). Deb and I rode the ski-lift to the top. It's almost 11,000 ft. above sea level. Quite a ride up! The color was phenomenal.

Your particular philosophy and point of view inform this shot, giving us a little glimpse into the world you see and how your mind interprets what it encounters..Maybe you're just trying to clarify your own set of understandings and sharing your conclusions with us. I find I do that often. Sometimes the picture comes first and the insight comes later We all try to make sense of things in our own ways. You just do it better than most.

I hope our human imprint is truly as insignificant as it appears in this image! I am glad for the power lines in this though because they give this an appropriate sense of scale. Makes me think of my favorite hymn "How Great Thou Art".

the place with the clouds looks gorgeous Jeff...I really like the frame division: one side to the cloud and the other for the cables as if offers both dynamism and balancing...

I liked the scale here and the color. The meaning came later, like discovering I left a coin in the dryer. I think a lot about the triune nature of humans, nature, and the divine. It's hard to get them all into the same shot.
