Facinating 'argument' Dennis; photography , like all arts will always be a subjective medium and of course and there will always be as many views ( pardon the pun ) as there are photographers, however, for what my opinion is worth, I teach my students that you must treat like for like; it is no good comparing or rating an orange to a banana or a formalistic romantic landscape with say a post modernist constructed image!

I tell my students that it is important to discover what their indivdual preferences and styles might be and just do it with a passion!...that is the best that anyone can do and in your images Dennis I see just that: a passion. A passion for that wonderful landscape, and a passion for the craft of photography. Anyone can make a record of the scene in front of them but it's the spirit behind the view finder that cames through in your portflio Dennis.

P.S. I love this photo saturated and dark..for what it's worth!

Tobias, your original assessment seems to be more a photoshop critique than anything that would aide Dennis in becoming a better photographer. A better digital imager maybe. I couldn't tell whether you really liked the photograph or not.

As far as your methodology, you can walk the fine line of factual observation and personal preference but I would argue that line is relative to the degree of craftsmanship one has in a particular medium.

I don't think I necessarily disagree with anything you're saying but, like I felt in your original comments, critiques that account for a whole lot of observations (factual or otherwise) but do not make a conclusion, don't amount to much in terms of a meaningful critique that the photographer can really ponder.

As you might be able to sense, I have rather lofty dreams of what photo.net could be. If it wasn't for that 80% ;)

Dennis!

This is really a beautiful photograph! It is just as I remember the place - only more beautiful. In my opinion, the sailboat needs to be there to add scale to the work and to break up the more or less straight shoreline. Again, My congrats!

Yes, definately like the quadtone version better. The colors in this one are just too 'happy' for me, although the top of the mountains which I thought were a little 'unnatural' in tone in the other one look fine here.

Best Wishes,

As a newcomer to the site I like it's general and worldwide appeal, a place where amateurs and pros can mix and respect each other.

Some of the critiquers and their comments here suggest they would be better off looking for something else but then perhaps they might be, er, exposed and would miss being able to tell 80% of us how crap we are.

Constructive criticism guys, what's wrong with that? Oh yea, the photo has some life and the boat does provide some scale for the impressive backdrop, but would prefer a more natural colour treatment myself.

This one generated alot of comments. I simply like it the way it is - boat, saturated colors and all. I particulaly like the light on the upper side otherwise the image might have needed a boost. Congrats.
