raymondborg 0 Posted March 16, 2010 Beautiful capture, Great colours and composition. The white background at bottom centre is over exposed. Congrats. Link to comment

jorge_fernandez3 1 Posted March 18, 2010 Dear Rarindra, This is a very unique image of an act of conection between child and pet. Chidren with farm animal do many things others ignore, and it is not abuse to their pet. Gentel water to the face when it is hot is great. Use of light is fantastic. Warm regards. Link to comment

mg 0 Posted March 18, 2010 Rarindra is definately a competent photographer with a strong eye and a personnal style, and probably this picture of the week is not the most representative of his flashy color palette... but... it so happens that most of the most flashy-colored or highly saturated pictures in his portfolio are by no means the ones I personnally prefer... I find the color palette very artificial (photoshop) in his works, at times, and even "very overdone" for this kind of photography... Perhaps that's more a testimony of my own personnal taste, than anything really valid as a general criticism, but well, that's just the way I see it. But this may be why I like this POW : no inflated colors, great back-lighting, a simple, interesting, well framed and well photographed action. What I like abit less about it is the lower part of the background, which, being so bright, detracts a bit from the main subject. But still, I like the overall feel. One more general observation about Rarindra's work, which is certainly abundant and worth seeing : I'd like to compliment him mostly for his great sense of composition, which is one of his best assets. Keep it up ! Selamat petang ! Link to comment
anuarpatjane 0 Posted March 19, 2010 A very nice photograph. Hopefully, the guys from PETA wont see it (just kidding). Link to comment
ernest-b 0 Posted March 19, 2010 This is to me a very interesting image. The backlighting of the spewed droplets pulls my eye directly to the center of action, i.e., to the axis between the boy's mouth and the rooster's head. What the heck is going on here? was my immediate response. Terrence, thank you for your explanation and for the link.In the upper 2/3 of this image, the very-dark background enables the droplets of rice wine to be perfectly highlighted--a bright cloud surrounding the main subject--while in the lower 1/3, the subject/bakground tones are reversed, enabling clear delineation of the rooster's legs and the boy's arms and torso. I don't think this particular scene could have been captured any more effectively. As Erik Adams said, it has a painterly quality. Not an image that PETA would be likely to endorse, but a visually excellent one. Well done!(edit) Annar, I was composing my own input, and didn't see your post until I'd submitted my own. Obviously, either this picture evokes strong thoughts of PETA...or it was your telepathic influence as I was typing. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted March 19, 2010 Just a short additionnal comment... I forgot to mention about the fairly strong blue cast, that's mostly visible in the top part of the background... It could easily be corrected of course, and I think the picture will look even better after this color correction. Best regards. Link to comment
alecee 0 Posted March 19, 2010 Definitely not your everyday composition due to the light source which probably come from 2 strobes directiing towards the face of the boy and another pointing at his head. It clearly lit up the spray of water. Clever composition deserving of the POW. Spraying water onto the cockeral is common during cock-fighting in Bali. Link to comment
zollner_erik 0 Posted March 19, 2010 Hmmm.....I belive it is not light of the sun ... Looks like halogen effect. Warm it.But the momment are excelent , the kid ... Good work . Link to comment
rarindra 0 Posted March 20, 2010 Thanks everyone for the discussion. I Knew that the water spray will be come white so I try to move around to get the dark background. And this effective can be done with backlit. But yes I cant help the contrast white below which is out of my 5d dynamic range. This taken about 8.00-9.00 am. And yes I use 80 cm reflector for this while the boy spat and I was ready when he will spat again.Marc is right that this one is minor edited compared to my another pics....this one mostly edited in Adobe camera Raw. The background is not blue colour cast I think because I like the blue compare to warm colour of body of the boy.And...this not cock fighting....cock fighting is adults sin. :) the boy just washed the his cock...with water. rarindra 0 Posted March 20, 2010 No Zollner, the light came from Sun. The background is wall of bamboo house. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 21, 2010 I think it's a great image, and I'm glad to hear that it was nothing to do with cockfighting. The elements fall into place well, and I am not concerned about the hot background. The spray balances that for me. My only complaint with this is that the reflector has lit up the boy's chest and arm a bit more than seems necessary to get the separation from the background. Rarinda has already noted what I intended to point out, that the boy has no blue cast, therefore the background should remain as is. Link to comment
sukhamaya_swain 0 Posted March 21, 2010 it would have had taken too much of waiting to get the perfect instant... Link to comment
rachel_balunsat 0 Posted March 21, 2010 In response to all the comments, I think it is perfectly balanced light. The luminosity of the boy's body ads grace and depth to the image vs the silhouette of the bird. My eye thinks the light is reflection off the water or surface below (I seem to think the boy is in a river). Thus the lighting looks natural whether or not it is done with a reflector. The blue background separates from the warm foreground. The warm light on the boy's body is what creates depth. The bright center bottom is balanced by the spray of water, and it looks correct as it indicates a rising or setting sun close to the horizon reflecting off the earth or water's surface. Beautiful image well done. Link to comment
sumon_mukherjee 0 Posted March 21, 2010 This photograph is an excellent depiction of transient pleasure of life. It attracts the viewer with the rich emotional bondage of the boy with his pet. The blue background is very effective in revealing the beauty of the water spray and it enhances the feeling tone attached to the story-telling aspect of the image. It’s a great capture. Congratulations Rarindra. Link to comment
tamoxifen 5 Posted March 21, 2010 I think this is a masterpiece. The choice of backlight is perfect, the explanation of the action of the boy, washing the cock is very likeable.... Link to comment
maulik_davda 0 Posted March 23, 2010 Excellent work, though I don't know much about technical photography but this one really gives the pleasure to see. great work. Link to comment
kimgooderham 0 Posted November 25, 2010 Its nice to see light coming from the background, I am always so used to seeing the subject lit from the foreground that this is a nice treat to see. Very nicely done! Link to comment
