A beautiful day in seattle, the sunshine and mild winter has brought an

the blossoms are just fine, but it's the magic of that soft blue, that takes this past the ordinary blossom image.

"spring is in the air", ta la la la....just like the good old oldie. well done. really nice background.

Charles, have read your comment about the sun and am trying to see why you say it has effected the image, the only thing i can come up with is the shadows from the pistils. i think i may be missing something here, could you please elaborate a wee bit more.

Roger, Like you I like the soft blue background which adds so much to the shot. These are very delicate blossoms and I feel the bright sunn has killed some of the detail in the flowers along with creating stronger shadows. it really isn't blowing out the white just taking away the deleicate nature of the flowers and leaves. IMHO it is just taking away the fine edge of the shot. I think it is still a good shot. - Charles

A little about this shot; I was using a new lens right out of the box, it was a totally blue sky day and here in Seattle we don’t see a lot of those! I had stopped by work with treats for a little team building with my Assistant (my day off) as I left I noticed this tree in full bloom…what a good way to try out a new lens. The breeze was blowing off the water and full sun, the shadows I felt were interesting and I purposely set up the shots to include blue sky. This was taken handheld wide open at f2.5, 50 mm macro lens.

 

If you could see this image before downsizing and moving to PN you might have the same opinion as I do…it is beautiful, the blue is magical and just pops off the monitor!

 

It turns out that I don’t like this lens; it searches and is very slow in low light. I’m returning it soon… still looking for another light macro without breaking the bank ;)

Charles, thank you for getting back to me. I think Pamela has perhaps explained why it is not pristine sharp. Its difficult to obtain those qualities when not using a tripod. i would like this image either way, this is one of those rare images where the b/g is, "top of the pops" the blossoms, why nice, are very much secondary to the magic of that blue. I can not think of another color that sets it off like the white. If it were black against that blue it would have a whole different mood. Have just noticed title for the first time, 10/10 could not fit any better. Again thank you Charles for taking the time.....

Thank you for all your thoughts, I appreciate the critiques very much. I do wish you could see this in its full scale and before moving to PN…it really is a lovely image and the softness actually works better aesthetically than a sharper version would. I have printed it for my bedroom wall; it makes me smile and brings a bit of sunshine inside.

Yep…I am going to get the new 100 mm macro. I really wanted a smaller lens (size) for walking around. This is the fourth lens I have tried, two different 50mm, a 60mm and an 85mm. I have played with the new 100mm L IS but wasn’t sure about it, it has a plastic body and that kinda bothers me but the reviews are great and it does make it lighter so…that is what I am trading this latest 50 in for. There is a small camera store ( I am a very good customer) close to where I live and they are very good about returns…they aren’t always best in price but the service and knowledge makes up for that! Thanks again for your thoughts ;)

Like the colors combination!

I love the flowering almond.......so tiny...yet so beautiful.....and for sure a sign of spring. We are in the middle of a snow storm............no real signs of spring just yet..........feeling a bit of Cabin Fever........you shot was a welcome sight to these 'winter eyes'...........lovely, Gail

Wow, we are so far from Spring in Eastern Ontario that photo opportunities like this seem like a far off dream. The white on blue and your chosen dof makes this a real winner.

p.s.-- Regarding the 10-20. I love that lens. Offers a very creative perspective and it's very sharp. At the 10, it's crazy wide. Hope that helps.
