for your very nice words!

No photoshop work on the image, no cropping, the image is like I took it. Just early morning light and the wonderful 2.8/300 that I bought used 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for your answer. I was just trying to figure what could have caused the many jpeg artefacts in this background... If you look closely at the edges of the bird, at large size, there are clear signs of over-sharpening. So, if the background was originally very blur - at 2.8, I certainly believe it was - and if you have then sharpened heavily the ENTIRE image, that may be the cause. After compression, a re-blurred blur and a sharpened blur seem to both end up being of an inferior quality than we would normally expect...

All I can say for sure is that I likthe light, the bird itself, the branch's texture, and the matching background color... The print would certainly look much better than what we see on the monitor...

As for the image itself, my only minor critique would be that the end of the branch sharp would perhaps be better. All else looks great, and even that detail isn't really a problem. Maybe you could just try, based on the original scan, to sharpen only (within a feathered selection) the bird itself and the sharp part of the branch - excluding the background. The sharpening should be at low radius (0.8 for example) and low amount (30 to 40). If necessary, apply USM that way a few times (at lower and lower radius and amount). Then save for web at 50% quality if file size isn't too big. That way your image should look better on screen than it does now.

Best regards.
