"Karpura Valli"

cmouli

Macro shot of "Karpura Valli" leaf. Coleus Ambonicus or Karpura Valli (Tamil), is a medicinal plant that has a flavor of camphor (Karpuram in Tamil means camphor). This plant has been used in South India for medicinal purposes (cold, cough, indigestion) a very long time.

Since the leaves of this plant is succulant, I find it great subject for macro shots. I find the patterns of veins in the leaves ("venation") fascinating. This particular plant is a great subject for this study.

How was this taken? I took a potted plant outside on a clear sunny day after dawn. I picked a particular leaf - slightly bigger than the size of a quarter coin - and let the sunlight coming at a sharp glancing angle fall on the front of the leaf. Lying on the ground I exposed backside of the leaf. Used 105mm macro lens.

Very nice shot. It has that soft and pastel color and and also soft light. Initially it feels the veins are symmetrical but they are not. Any other compositions, especially keeping the central vein diagonal etc?

thanks, Lalit. Yes - I do have few other shots - but I posted this one to highlight the fact that you keenly observed. The shot "looks" symmetrical from a distance but it is not. What causes such randomness in venation? In nature we see beautiful symmetry in many forms at a larger scale - however at "micro' level they are not. "Order amidst Chaos?" - interesting to think about. thanks for the comments.
