jtangen 0 Posted January 10, 2010 Bowling Ball Beach, Northern California Coast. My second visit here. First visit was clear skies and way too low tide where the "bowling balls" were completely dry, so no photos taken. Came here this time hoping for water to be mid-level on the rocks for some long exposure stuff. It was mid-level but not when the light was good. I got here early and the tide was high and covering the "balls". I walked right passed and way down the beach. I headed back and by the time I got here the tide was out enough to see them. daveinwilton 1 Posted January 10, 2010 My favorite place in the world, the Mendocino/Sonoma Coast. You have done an excellent job of capturing her beauty. Wonderful, wonderful work, thank you for sharing. -Dave Link to comment

mike_stemberg 40 Posted January 10, 2010 It's only when opening up the full screen (as opposed to seeing this image as a thumbnail) does one see the full impact of that sea-creature on that boulder in the context of the whole scene. Nicely seen and worked out! Link to comment

wogears 186 Posted January 10, 2010 Technically superb, of course. Just enough detail in the highlights and shadows, excellent control of flare, etc. A study in texture and form, as modeled by the low sunlight. Perfect example of being in the right place at the right time. The starfish is a wonderful proof of the old 'spot of red' adage about color photography. Emotionally, though, it's not really 'turning me on'. Maybe it's the glut of sun/sea/stone shots on PN and elsewhere. Maybe it's something about the tonalities. More likely, it is the size of the image on my 1600x1200 monitor (recently calibrated, BTW). I think this would look a LOT better as a 20x30 print, hanging on a wall in the appropriate light. james_moro 0 Posted January 10, 2010 great subject and composition. I'm not too stoked about the sea foam and the lack of water. I would suggest retaking the shot at high tide to get a more surreal feel out of it :) Link to comment
acjtucson 0 Posted January 10, 2010 Holy Moly! That's the photo I wanted to take. I was there about 2pm on 1/9. It was cloudy and gray and a ow tide but not as far out as this. I saw a starfish at the bottom of a rock at sand level but didn't have the fortune of tides for this one. Fantastic. I'd go back every weekend if it weren't a 6 hr drive. Great shot. Link to comment

jana 1 Posted January 15, 2010 Magical place full of potential. As far as the composition, I would try to eliminate light in the sky (or sky) and the ocean foam at left. cheers Jana Link to comment
