Hi Brendan, lovely image. I particularly like the cool colour tones, contrasting with the warmth from the rising sun. Lovely serene scene with that slow shutter speed, greatly simplifying the image by removing all movement from the water.

I often find the 1st exposure typically around 8min at f/16 is the one I like best. The result of time averaging the exposure of the water often makes it a mirror for the sky and rocks, in this case the sky was very blue overhead and I was lucky to catch some red highlights which dissapeared at sunrise.

 

The surf on this occasion was pounding and I was wet above my waist, the tide was also coming in which made it even more interesting, you would never realise this looking at this early exposure.

Hi Brendan. To me the lower part of this picture is just awesome, while I would have preferred the clouds to be a little less blurred. Did you blend more than one picture or is it a single long time shot? Best regards Per.

This is 2 shots blended as I find this works better than ND filters when you have rocks etc. poking above the horizon, also as you point out a longer exposure would have blurred the clouds even more, in this case I got away with a shorter exposure for the sky. Reducing the exposure further would not have been possible without adjusting apperture or ISO, something I try to avoid when blending 2 shots together.

Personally I like the blur from a long exposure in the sky, in particular if this provides some good leading lines that direct attention in the photo. I achieved this with an earlier shot however the colors were all blue an not as interesting.
