hagar 7,644 Posted November 26, 2009 Quite the find.. I had to do a bit of research to find the beast :-). Hericium (= Hydnum=Dryodon) coralloides. One of the hedgehog fungi that grows typically on beech trees, and may occasionally be found on oak, elm or ash. They can get to be quite large (12 in). They are sort of edible apparently. The flesh is bitter, but that disappears with boiling. The pendant spines or teeth are where the spores are produced. And a nice shot by the way :-) Link to comment

katzpjs 50 Posted December 29, 2009 Over the years I have found numerous samples of this species of mushroom, but I quickly found that they are not to my liking for eating. They are beautiful and always a kick to find one. Thanks for sharing this. Link to comment
