Sam patiently sat for me while I played around with some different

lighting setups. This is a single flash through a 28" softbox camera

right. I was going for a subtle look and left out a rim or background

flash. what do you think and what could I do to improve it?

Chad... I'm not a studio shooter, but the light seems a tad flat. Perhaps a little rim or overhead light would help separate from the background, but mainly some highlights adjustments to his face would accent this very compelling expression. Regardless, Sam's a handsome fella... Mike

Also not qualified to comment on studio lighting - but I can tell you that this shot is all about those wonderful eyes for me. The head tilt and ear position also add much appeal.
