Thank you. I am still learning about composition...guess I got it right by accident. This scary guy was ambling about in my garden, in plain sight. I sent this photo to someone I know who can identify caterpillars, butterflies and moths. He wrote the "eyes" aren't eyes at all, but the places where the wings will eventually grow.

Thank you, Ruud! I am so glad that I was curious, and wanted to know the name of this caterpillar. Now "he" is on photo.net for you to see.

I used a Nikon DX 18 to 55mm lens. (I don't know how to describe it any further). I will ask my husband. Doug Rickert is also on this site, and knows a lot more about photography than I do. I cropped and sharpened this image. So it looks larger than it is.

That sounds like the stock lens. I have it, but have not been able to get this close with it. (matter of fact I've started using my 70-200 mm zoom lens to try and do better) No close up lens ring add on or anything?

That is a fabulousimage. Colors are great and you sure got that nice crips sharpness where matter the most.

Congratulations

Excellent shot, great detail, composition and cropping. Do you know what kind of caterpillar this is?

All the best,

Janet

When I first saw this scary creature in my garden, I ran inside the house and grabbed my camera. I found someone on the internet who can identify caterpillars, moths and butterflies. I sent him the photograph. This is a Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar. It is about 3 inches long and is non-poisonous. Those "eyes" aren't eyes at all, but the places where the wings will eventually form. All the best to you, Janet. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks, Amy, for stopping by. And for the compliment. Now I can't wait for next spring, so I can photograph more bugs.

Thank you, Birte. I appreciate your comment. and compliment This is a Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar, about the size of a Vienna Sausage. (see the photo in the comments page here). I didn't use a macro lens here to get this image, just cropped it.

It is a wonderful portrait of this beautiful monster. Wonderful color and splendid pose. Very few caterpillars can pose so well. Good job for both of you.

Hi Janice, I really like this shot - great composition, colours and focus. Having such an ugly bug helps, but you have done a great job on this one. regards, erik

Thank you both for your comments. This was a very slow moving and large caterpillar. I had time to get the camera and the scissors, and take about 10 shots for comparison, before he disappeared beneath the leaf litter. I think this is my highest-rated photo. :)

Thank you, Paulo. Usually a colorful insect is poisonous, but this Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar is not. Huge and scary-looking, though. I appreciate you stopping by to comment.
