Blue Sky sunset (Best Large)

www.hawaiianphotos.net/mauiphotos.htmNo filters on this one. The clouds were going nuts and I wanted to capture something. I cannot believe that only took two shots of this. Taken in 2002 Lahaina, Maui. www.hawaiianphotos.netwww.hawaiianphotos.net/Kauaitours.htm

You must go through lots of film to come up the quality images you post here. At least I would like to think so :-) Good job!

Great textures...the disrupted sky mimics the sea, well done. I think rotating the image slightly clockwise to provide a horizontal horizon line would help add a note of stability around which the wild activity takes place.

You did catch a lovely scene but an ND filter would have made this so much more. Also the placement of the sun in the center is not the best choice for such scenery regardles of the other details. It's so bright that it can't go without notice. Most will enjoy the bright colors and not take much notice but it leaves the composition somewhat static. This is not always true but for a wide view it usually is.

Vincent all of your pictures have a very surreal feeling to them, you have elevated a simple sunset shot into a very original and different photo. I don't get it, but I like it a lot.

Thanks for all of the comments and tips. I have learned from experience that when the sun is this low, and when there are clouds that are in some way diffusing it's effects, that an ND filter is not always necessary. Here, the sun is not at all overpowering or blown out in my opinion. Look at the detail in the sky, it is perfectly exposed. I feel the same way about the foreground. Because it is a sunset, I still prefer the dramatic effect of light variations over a crystal clear, evenly lit scene. Because of the tremendous amount of action in this scene, I still feel placing the sun in the middle worked best in this situation. It is balanced in a complete sense. I would not want to change a thing in this image, accept for having taken more of it than just 2 shots. I do think there is some value to having captured at least one sunset image without any filtration...for many of you diehard purists out there. I do truly appreciate the tips and am putting them into my memory for future opportunities. Thanks again for your suggestions and feedback!

Best to all,

Vince

This is indeed a dramatic image, and the exposure is well chosen, I think. I do like the centered-sun choice. It works well here. I'm probably with the crew that would prefer it with the ND grad, but I see your reasons for doing it this way. It looks like the saturation's been hit a little in post-processing, resulting in a strong blue line on the incoming wave (though I suppose that could just be an effect of the Velveeta). Also, is it slightly tilted, or is that just me? At any rate, this is very good dramatic work. Enjoy.

Vincent- This truly outstanding work. I feel like I could wait a lifetime for a shot like this. The sky is incredible, the waves glisten and the dark corner anchors it all. Regards, Jud

Idon't like the stop action in the crashing water, but the sky is beautiful. Signature is a little on the bright side.

Brilliant. But as others pointed out, I too feel that ND could have been tried. I appreciate your point, but then ND would have enabled you to show more details in the foreground yet retaining perfect exposure for the sky. Just my opinion. Having shot in such situations where the light and composition changes so rapidly, it is extremely difficult to be prepared on all fronts. Overall, a great shot.

Great! A pity there aren't many details in the rocks. I guess there's much more in the original slide.
