Prematurity

brian_smistek

This premature infant beat the odds and lived :o) The baby was born ten weeks early, at a birthweight of 1100 grams. The adult hand is that of a woman nurse. The photo was part of an illustrative story on the fragility and intensivity of care for premature infants. The photo was taken at the Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Thank you ALL for letting me share this image with you AND thank you all for your kind words and literate critiques :O)

A few hundred dollars of prenatal care beats half a million of ICU. Like the good Dr. Benjamin Spock said, "Be good to your baby before it is born."

I can't really say anything about this photo that hasnt been already said. I only have one suggestion to you, sir. Put this photo into every photography contest you can find. This is one of the best photos (not artistically, perhaps) I have ever seen. On photo.net, on the internet, in museums. This is truly something you should cherish for years and years. 1000/1000

This is a very powerful image and one of the best I've seen in years. I have an ambivalent feeling though if I would congratulate you or feel sorry for the young and fragile life. Anyway, that's the essence of this picture, to evoke something from the viewer and you succeeded in this area.

Very emotional image. I too had a premature baby. Born 12 1/2 weeks premature, 2 lbs 1/2 oz, dropped to 1 1/2 lbs. Came home 3 1/2 months later after many problems including pnemonia at 3 lbs. We were told there was no hope and he would die. Well, he is now almost 20 (see Andrew in my portfolio) Another reason we should never give up. I hope all went as well for this babe. Thanks for sharing. Leanna:O)

The adult hand is what caught my eye first. I think perhaps because it symbolizes the responsibility adults have over babies. Hiding the babies face -- was this planned? I am curious as to the facial details. Just another idea:-) This image touches my heart and reminds me of how precious a new life is, thanks for sharing:-)

What a powerful photo. The contrast and love, this is a real drama. It gives a viewer a good feeling of how fragile the life of infant is.

that a picture on the front page grabs my attention and forces me - not invites me, but forces me - to come take a look. This one did. Extremely compelling.

Your photo doesn't so much tell a story as it begs one to imagine one, then throw that one away and imagine another. Repeat.

Well done.
