laura2 0 Posted January 10, 2003 Rate these guys, they won't bite...hard...as long as you feed them stale bread... :) Link to comment
jim oker 0 Posted January 10, 2003 I find good humor in the shot - it's easy to anthropomorphize these gulls. I also like the pattern in the eyes which is echoed in the boat's windows. Nice tones too. It is a bit on the fuzzy side - maybe more unsharp masking needed? Link to comment
laura2 0 Posted January 10, 2003 I've never really worked with unsharp masking before! Maybe I'll try it, I'm always trying new things. :) Thank you! Link to comment
v. bice 0 Posted January 11, 2003 I really like this photo of seaguls.....I have started a collection of seagul shots you might enjoy....Good Job.......http://www.geocities.com/vbice2001/S3.html.....V.Bice Link to comment
jfnahas 1 Posted January 13, 2003 At first sight it seems too busy, but them a smile just appears on the face of the viewer... nice tones, nice DOF, however, the focus seems a little soft. Thanks for sharing Laura! Link to comment
valonia_wynne 0 Posted January 15, 2003 An interesting idea but I do find it to be a bit busy. Once you figure out how to use unsharp mask perhaps you can spend some time with the clone tool to try the shot without the riverboat :-) Link to comment
laura2 0 Posted January 15, 2003 Thanks for all the comments! I was thinking, maybe I'm better off just waiting for when the riverboat leaves the area and taking the picture. Except the thing is, when the riverboat leaves, it scares away the ducks and swans and the seagulls go flying to the boat... :) Link to comment
simon_hodgson 0 Posted January 15, 2003 It almost looks as if they've just lined up for you in this shot! The Aussie seagulls only hang around if there is a chance of a feed! As with a lot of your work, nice artistic touch. Link to comment
jean eckard 0 Posted January 15, 2003 That's a hell of a good shot! I Just love it.... Link to comment
alberto.conde 0 Posted January 16, 2003 I understand that this shot can only be taken hurriedly to avoid them flying away. This explains the soft focus... but also explains that the photographer behind the camera is a hell of a good photographer with a sharp eye for the opportunities.Frankly, Laura, if a "youngster", 19 years of age, is able to capture the photos you publish you have a hell of a future as an artist. From my nearly 40 years more and 4 children older than you I declare, hereby, my unconditional admiration :-)) Link to comment
pboraschi 3 Posted January 16, 2003 that wants to be different. All the seaguls all looking left except for one! That's the first thing I saw! The river boat is annoying, but I agree, there's only a 1/125 s to snap it (hehe!). But you could blur the background in PS... later Pascal Link to comment
sambal 0 Posted February 1, 2003 Very nice picture. Comment from another fan of seagulls :) Link to comment
burkhard_schipper 0 Posted February 23, 2003 I am surprised by its relative sharpness of foreground AND background. It is probably due to the design of those digital cameras. Link to comment
laura2 0 Posted February 23, 2003 I know!!! It actually pisses me off a bit sometimes! Link to comment
paul_ensom 0 Posted March 15, 2003 This is a great shot! Unfortunately, the ferry has some patches on it just as bright as the gulls and distracts the eye a little. I would recommend equalizing everything but the gulls and the rail to make them the CLEAR object of the photo. Otherwise, I really love this shot. (I hope you don't mind my borrowing your photo to show you what I mean -- attached) Link to comment
briany 0 Posted March 18, 2003 I agree with the above comments about the boat and sharpness. And I like that one showing us his feathery little ass. I think the image would be stronger maybe taken a little to the left, so that we don't see a "first" gull on the right hand side, just gulls to infinity in both directions. And that way our odd-ball would be a little more prominent. Perhaps you can entice them to stay with you with some food as the boat is pulling away? Link to comment
garthsaloner 0 Posted June 3, 2003 Laura: I like this one a lot. It's a pity that the boat is so sharp. I don't know how much of a purist your are about manipulation, but you might try sharpening the gulls and blurring the background in Photoshop. Link to comment
slava_kozlov 0 Posted June 14, 2003 More focus on seagulls; less on background (but keep the boat). That would od it. Link to comment
jeff d 1 Posted August 17, 2003 great perspective. they look like they are about to plaster the riverboat. Link to comment
misterken 0 Posted February 2, 2004 Laura, how did you convince these guys to stay put? Where I work (a lab at a wastewater plant) there are hundreds (thousands?) of these guys and while I've got a few shots with recognizable gulls in them, none so close or as still. Well done. I leave you with George Seagull. - Mister Ken Link to comment
