The trial and tribulation of an amateur photographer on a Canadian Rockies vacation

with my family. Thanks to photonet I asked a few questions before I left to improve

both my techniques and equipment. With family in tow I tried to get my photos done

early before breakfast (catch that 5:30 sunrise) and in late day (when I had just a

few minutes to do my thing). I used a tripod, remote and sometimes timer. I really

liked using the timer. Most photos were bracketed and merged in photomatix. I tried

using my grad filters but I got better results with bracketing do to the extreme

contrast I found in the field. I tried different apertures but seemed to get the best

results with f/22. I was hoping to use a full frame camera but that didn’t work out (

see a previous thread of mine) so I primarily used my 20D with a 10-22mm lens

with polarizer.I was a little frustrated with my new arca swiss monoball z-1. The flip

lock quick release plate seemed to loosen too often-the coged wheels just didn’t

keep the same tension. I was also frustrated when trying to take vertical shots and

just wished the vertical notch on the arca was a little longer. I had to move the tripod

legs when I just wanted to move the camera 5 degrees more but the notch wouldn’t

let me. Not all my foregrounds subjects were as sharp as I wanted but all in all for a

rank amateur with family in tow I think I did well
