I am trying to imagine the place where you shot this photo. There must be people behind who believe in the power of symbols to protect against the evils coming from the open land. The symbols hang on the gallows, like the sword of Damokles. A thistly plant below, some similarity with the talisman, no way to go, no way to enter from this side at least.

It makes me think of the grasslands and Mongol tribes. Soon they will be advancing over the steppes to the Great Wall of China which lies yet hundreds of miles over the horizon, bringing with them their fierce talisman.
