Nice photo Joanie, only let a bit down by the shadow on the left background and too much light on wrapping on the right of the picture. Still, good image, well done.

sorry, that's not much of a critique... is it just me, or is her left eye a little less sharp than is her right?

This portrait stopped me in my pn surfing tracks!

great job!

Joanie,

She is a beautiful girl. You have focused well on her right eye. Her make-up is applied well, but I would like to see a wee bit more intense shade on her lips. Her lips kind of blend in to her skin tone. Her skin tone is very good. She has very nice eye contact with the camera (viewer). The colors in her portrait go nicely with her beautiful eyes. You have framed her well.

I do have to say that I am not all that wild about the lines in the wrap -- especially with them going in different directions. I keep looking at the lines, instead of her face. A nice plain or lace wrap would have worked better. The wall behind her is a different color than the wrap which is a bit distracting. It is very difficult to match hues. When they are close, your mind tells you that you want them to be the same.

The composition is quite good, but you could move her slightly to her left. You want to make sure she is facing into the picture, not out of it. The compositional "rule" that would address this issue suggests that you position the tip of the nose in the vertical center of the photograph.

You have multiple catch lights. One catch light in each eye is preferred. With multiple catch lights you want one to be dominant. As was mentioned by someone else, her right eye is sharper than her left. You must have a very narrow depth of field. There is no reason for this. Your background doesn't really need to be much out of focus. It is already very plain. Also, you want to move her away from the background to get rid of the shadow on her right.

Your main light is coming from the side. You want your main light to be coming from a higher angle. Your main light must be quite close to her to make the "wrap" on her left side to be so much brighter than the rest of the photograph. Move her further away from your main light to make both sides of her receive a more equal amount of light.

Very nice portrait,

Mark
