Just a note on this picture. I really shouldn't post it because the quality is so poor but there's something about it that reminds me a lot of the pictures I used to find in my Aunt's photo book when I was a kid. People looking at the camera and smiling; "Oh, that's Great Aunt Elsie, I think, and her husband (I forget his name) and some little kid with a doll. That's Mom? Really?..." .Anyway, that's the feeling I get with this shot. There's just such au unpretentious "family shapshot" about this picture I thought I'd share it with you, poor quality or not.

Perhaps someone's distant future thrift-store find, with a world of little details and memories that we usually ban from our "important" photographs. Remember those potted plants that Aunt Candi used to have in her backyard? Or those striped coffee mugs that make you think of Summer on the back deck every time you pick one up.

Yeah, this is the good stuff with all its low contrast fuzzy focus charm.

Things are pretty quiet over here so it's nice having you drop by. I returned from northern California almost 2 weeks ago after spending a couple of weeks with family. I brought my camera, of course, but I've never had much luck shooting relatives, too many considerations and expectations, I guess - always the bane of good photography. This time I decided I'd shoot for the future, so to speak, so that thirty years from now the children in these pictures could look at these photos and see a slice of time that they were a part of. I've always been fascinated looking at old pictures not only for their compositions but also as historical records, time capsules that freeze a particular moment forever. I think the link between generations has become fragile over the past few decades and it's that connection that helps give us a sense of who we are and where we fit in in the scheme of things. Context is important and family photography helps provide that context. Your comments about the coffee mugs and the potted plants are right on the money

Too much is made for mountaintop photographic experiences. A dime a dozen. Here you have compressed an entire lifetime into a more than a snapshot, each element a little clue of who was who and what was important.

You don't need to apologize for being human. At the end of the day, these types of pictures are what the cameria is there for, n'est pas? Might I add you have a lovely family.

' Back to basics' is the message! - in my opinion. Independent of the nice accompanying story it is very refreshing to see an image like this one. And I guess Emmanuel brought it to the point. Thank you very much for sharing, Jack. You made my day...
