Light Paint

stevesieren

My Girlfriend has been bugging for a print(BW) of this for months so I finally processed it. I shot it back in March out near Bishop. Had a little bit of help from a friend that has never tried light painting. He painted the trees with a flash light but I really think he was just enjoying scaring the crap out of the water fowl. They were so loud! We had some not so good light on that trip so we did some night photography to make up for it.

eyecatching and lovely. you can also make a beautiful wide photo out of it, by cropping the upper part

Thank you for the comment in the details - as per the title I did not think it is PSed - and yes this can be shot and not computed - which is also my way, but I'm still far from this, but am inspired of course. Would be nice if you could give me/us some hints on the number of flash releases which have been needed for it - and the metering of course.

Aside the technical, which is needed to gain that success - this images is so well balanced and - hard to find the words. I understand that your relative like a print. 14/14 if only possible!

Congratulations!

Can you post the original capture? This is so perfect for light painting, perfectly even illumination of the subject, complete exclusion of any unwanted elements, perfect falloff at the edges, perfectly uniform 0,0,0 black on the entire blank space of the photo, that it is very difficult to believe it is not manipulated.

Very creative work Steve. Sometimes we go to shoot, get lousy conditions and come back with our tail tucked. I have always tried something to make use of the time put into a photo trip when conditions aren't optimum, but you are a true visionary as far as making the best of it. Nobody wants to drive all the way to Bishop and get skunked. Great thinking outside the box (yeah I know that's so cliche, but I couldn't think of anything else).

Steve, this is awesome.

Awesome and impressive, yet so silent and beautiful.

I cannot help love this image that has a uniqueness to it.

Great work.

Thanks everyone, I sure appreciate any comments you all have left.

Bret, You can give someone a low score all the time but it won't affect anyone much at all. I never have the time to post originals but since you asked, I guess I'm doing some good by spending the time to do this. Here is the original file, a few minor adjustments were made and minor imperfections cloned out. Shoot me if that's manipulation. Bringing out detail, simple dodging, burning and adding contrast, and the removal of any imperfections that do not disrupt the scene, all to give the viewer a chance to see how the human eye whitnessed the scene would be expected from any editor. Since you work/worked for the BBC you should know that. Hope you are able to keep your images. In the future it would be nice to see some of your photos here since you do not post and only critique. Have a nice evening.

Oh, and thanks to Benjamin Glatt for lighting up the trees for me.
