I wish I could understand better the scale of these intracate carvings. I cannot imagine the time that was involved in carving this from stone! I wonder how many separate peices there are? Your crisp focus and clarity are to be praised. With such detail the image is superb. Well done!

The "erotic" carvings depict kama, sensuality, connectedness to the other, one of the four duties in Hinduism, and in other religions it is expressed as a duty to procreate, a sacrament of marriage. Where two deities are shown coupled, they become a single religious entity and object of worship, rather than an event in a narrative. Your picture is interesting because it shows the Hindu pantheon as a manifold, a complex interweaving of supernatural and natural with numerous deities and avatars, confusing to Western eyes because it is so organized, but demonstrates so little apparent hierarchy and subordination.
