mario2 0 Posted May 21, 2009 It's a good document about decadence! The tone applied works fine due to the theme choose. The only thing that assault my mind is to change two things: increase the contrast to magnify a bit the dramatically consequences of the scenery and decrease a bit the high lights areas a bit burned ( over the trees). Best Regards Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted May 21, 2009 Mario; The choice of low contrast and blown highlights was deliberate but I may have gone too far, so thanks for letting me know your thoughts. I will try your suggestions. I was attempting to create the look of an old snapshot poorly maintained and tossed in the back of a drawer since the 60's. Looking through a bunch of prints inherited from my mother, most of which were taken between the 20's and the 60's, I noted that the contrast in many of the more faded images is very flat and the skies are blown. Given the subject I may have taken too many liberties in my attempt to make a photo I taken yesterday look dated. Link to comment
mazevedo 0 Posted May 21, 2009 One has to know the characteristics of old films and their reactions to time. Nevertheless this is a good photo and that's what matters. BR, --MAA Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted May 23, 2009 Let's just see what sort of goodies Uncle Gordy has brought us this time....oh my God, cover your eyes kids, your crazy uncle has discovered the rest stop on the road to insanity. Check in and you never check out again! Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted May 23, 2009 Okay, based on Jack's comment I find myself wanting the directions to this roadsice stop. I could use some craziness of a different kind in my life right now. Gordon, I saw with on the NWF and now I get to read a bit of the story behind the image. I like what you have done but maybe it is too bright at the top. All in all it is great. Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted May 23, 2009 Mario; Thanks, glad you liked this one. Jack; I will add that to my long list of reasons why everyone steers clear of crazy uncle Gord's place. The owner came out while I was photographing the sign to ask what I was doing. When I pointed to the sign he said that it used to read motel closed and the wind must have blown away some of the letters. I suggested that it must have been a very selective breeze. He shrugged and walked away. Shawn; Thankfully this place is only a short walk from my house..... if you're ever in the neighborhood..... The general consensus seems to be that I went too far with the sky. Thanks for your candor and your visit. I will try reworking this one without going so hard at the sky. Link to comment
lizweisiger 0 Posted May 23, 2009 "Uncle Gordy"? Geez, Gord, your fans are adoring, aren't they? Yes, I am, too. This is a great capture. The old goat who owns the place doesn't know what a find this is. I've had a guy, or ten, who have approached me, and asked "what the....are you taking a picture of the side of my building (etc.) for? Best be running along, little lady." Keep 'em coming, Unk. gordonjb 10,860 Posted May 23, 2009 Liz; I'm guessing Jack had his tongue planted rather firmly in his cheek when he made that reference. Yes we do tend to illicit some odd comments and even become involved in some peculiar conversation whilst out and about taking photos. My all time favourites are the people who see me photographing a piece of junk on the sidewalk or a door knob and conclude that I must be very desperate for some subject matter and suggest that there is a nice park down the road with a lovely flower garden. I get some variation on that them quite regularly. I always thank the person for their suggestions and think to myself, how considerate they must be to try and save me from the drudgery of shooting an old boot in the gutter :-) Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted June 8, 2009 I wish I could find an old boot in the gutter. I'll have to look harder. Link to comment
