Let me try this out on you. I made this portrait as part of a

photography course at Central St Martin's School of Art. What do you

think?

Very interesting technique bringing a colour-coded time dimension into the image - great potential for extension to other variables (expression, gaze etc.) which I shall have to try - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Best wishes, Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan,

You understood what I was doing here perfectly. I'd love to see what you come up with if you try this yourself.

Best wishes

Hi Sue. Thanks for your flurry of comments.

As I browsed your work some reminded me of 'Seeing With Photography"

http://www.seeingwithphotography.com/swpc_home.html

Are you familiar with them? Painting with light has always intrigued me. I ran a workshop for 'troubled' children. We used a 3-1/4 x 4-1/4 polaroid and flashlights. The kids were so focused it was hard to end the sessions. And great photos. I never tried in color, but I like what you got here and imagine it could have been accomplished in a similar fashion. This particular one brings Chuck Close to mind.

I enjoy your take on things.

Josh, thanks for the link to 'seeing with photography', I wsn't aware of it before and find the processes fascinating.

It's funny you should mention Chuck Close. This subject and I often used to collaborate. I would have an idea that I would want to work through (like this), he being an artist himself would ask me, in return, to photograph him in certain ways for his own work.

Earlier that day he had asked me to replicate the lighting in a Close self portrait for him. So maybe Chucky was still inadvertanly around when I made this.
