Walking On Sunshine

This spider (female Metellina Mengei) likes to make it`s web quite low to the ground and it`s seems to like shadow areas. I love to discover how insects have their way of camouflaging themselves.

When shooting macros I like to start before the sunrise and I found this spider just as the first sunlight beamed through the leaf of a Araceae plant.

So, to capture this image I was actually lying on my back, face up WITH a tripod and had the hardest time just getting the focus right. The tripod with it`s legs spread out horisontally and with the column directed also horsontally, I can get real low.

Lying with my head on the ground, I had my camera right in front (on top?) of my eyes.

 

Now the real trick was to focus so that the web that the spider is walking on would not be visible in the image and also expose for that golden sunshine through the leaf.

I shot 5 different images like this and chose this as I like the part of the leaf that is on the same focal plane as the spider enhances the light and gives the image more visual impact.

I think the image gives the impression of something extraordinary, almost unreal.
