I moved my bird feeder a couple of weeks ago; today I grabbed this shot through an

open window about 10' from the subject. The Blue Jays are almost too heavy for the

feeder and knock it askew when they land. Slight crop to left edge and top.

Comments/critiques welcomed.

Hi Linda-

Thanks for the comments. Yeah - I was thinking maybe it was the flash that made him spit out his dinner - or maybe pollen allergies and a big sneeze. Anyway, needless to say I didn't see the bit of corn when I snapped the shutter - just got to live the "f/8 and be there" rule. I really do appreciate your positive feedback. It usually doesn't bother me, but I'm really doing a slow burn over the 3s on this shot... so much so that I'm seriously contemplating not posting any more photos until Josh gets the new rating system in place.

Nice shot, appropriate title. Blue Jays are wonderful subjects because they have wonderful individualities. We put out peanuts for them and they will sort them, weigh them and decide which ones they want first. I might have cropped a little more of the feeder out. Don't let the 3's bother you. I think there are a couple people on the siite that just wait for shots to come on so they can give them 3's. I get them and know the picture is better than that so I just discount them. Same is true with some of the 6's I get, so they balance themselves out. Well I have the new camera, have taken a fes shots but am so intimidated by all of the buttons and choices I don't feel comfortable with it. I haven't had a chance to really shoot a lot because of work and rain. Maybe this weekend. Keep shooting. -- Charles

He seems to be saying, "what just happened". When you said that Blue Jay's are almost too heavy for your feeder I smiled as it does look as though he is bending the metal perch. Nicely captured!

Sandra, please don't stop posting! There has been endless discussions about the rating system here going on for years. Some people are very hurt when they recieve threes. I get them all the time on some of, what I consider to be, my best work. I ignore it. There are so many people out there who are rating, some aren't Photo.net members. There are people from all over the world with vastly different cultures, different ages, different economic situations, different levels of education and different tastes. They could be coming from someone who is jealous, depressed, or mentaly ill, who knows! Charles could be right about a few out there just waiting to give out threes with glee. For whatever reason not everyone is going to like your work. If you are going to exhibit here or anywhere, you have to develop a bit of a tough skin and except this. Just let it roll of your back, c'est la vie. I think if someone is going to give you a three they should say why, if not it's not really valid, so don't sweat it.

Anyway, I like your work!!! Keep on posting. To h--l with those stupid three givers.

All the best.

The force will be with you. What a strange and wonderful shot. I guess he's a picky eater! Perfect timing.

Hi Sandra, I think it's a lovely capture, very good light and shutter speed to freeze the action...well done!

I agree with the advice regarding the 3's I get them too, but I just consider them to be a number on a piece of paper....one has to take into account who and what people are rating, some people have no idea what a good photograph is, or what it takes to get one. And when people look at something they are bringing their baggage, experiences, like, dislikes etc., into the rating, frankly whether or not they like it...and in the end it doesn't really matter what they think, what matters is what you think....so don't let them steal your confidence in yourself, just take it for what it is, and as another said, you do have to have a tough skin and just let it roll off. I ask myself 'how important is it'? and the answer is...it's not...:) Thank you for your visit to my page, I really like your Bluejay. I haven't seen one in a long time, and he's a beauty!! :) Linda

In this photo you have stoped the time. The time that a bird want to grasp a seed or an edible with its beak in the air. So interesting moment. Excellent photo.Other elements are good too. Kind regards to you Sandra

Glauco, B.C, Saleh, Fabrizio, Glenn, Linda, Linda, Charles, Sonia, Cynthia Jean and Jim-

Thank you all for your comments and critiques. I really appreciate your input. Yup - the timing was blind luck - the kind every shutter bug hopes for at last once. I shot this through an open window, no blind - except blind luck. Sorry I lost my patience over the "mystery ratings" - it's nothing I haven't addressed vocally before - usually regarding someone else's victimized photos. Achieving this result was one of my "dream shots" - never thought I'd actually achieve it, and I was a little too sensitive at two-something in the morning.
