Watching this animal watching me gave me the feeling I wasn't welcome

on the other side of the (unseen) fence. I've tried to convey the

territoriality of the subject. Does anyone think I've succeeded? How

best to improve? Thanks.

The cow does appear to have drawn a line in the sand so to speak. Something about the face seems to regard the viewer as an interloper. I think the relative inability of a cow to hold it's head above the plane of the body makes them appear timid. The lower the photographic angle, the more the cow (or any other animal for that matter) will appear to be holding it's head up thus giving a more confident appearance. That's my experience anyway.

wonderful photo. I dig it. The only problem I see with it is that the bottom right and top right corners seem a bit dark--could it have been a bit of viginetting, or is my eyesight going? Anyway, you convey your intent well in this photo.

I think you captured the mood you were seeking, though the fluff of hair and the bunny ears make it hard for her to look too intimidating.

Agree with the comment on lowering your angle to make her look more imposing and have her cross the horizon. Having her completely below the horizon diminishes her slightly.

I tried a picture like this long ago and you did a much nicer job of it. Beautiful colors.

If you were to lower the vantage point from where this shot occured, you would have compressed the vastness of the field. The size and depth of that cow's domain would no longer be an element of this photo.

great expression on the cow, great colours and lighting, great use of dof. I also think the tiny flowers - lighter dots add a little "movement" to the grass...

Very nice shot!!

Len,

As promised...

You have a lot of great shots in your portfolio. Surprisingly this one really caught my eye partly because it's a technically great photo, and partly because I've tried to photograph cows before(unsuccessfully I might add).

Exposure...IMHO the exposure is a perfect balance. You split the middle between the top of the cow's back (overexposed) and the dark green areas(foreground and treeline) that are underexposed. My gut tells me that is not vignetting in the bottom right, but rather just a dark area (based on your lens and exposure settings). The cow's face is perfectly exposed. You can even see the detail inside the cows ears!

DOF...There is not much to say about the depth of field except that it's well executed and gives the cow/field a real 3D feel.

Composure... Your use of the "rule of thirds" is great. Just the right amount of foreground and background to give you an idea of the cows surroundings.

Color...Can the cow's creme color standout any more against the green canvas? Your eye is definately drawn to the subject. Len, your Godsend on this day was the overcast conditions. This picture would not have been nearly as good without the clouds!

What's wrong with it?...Nothing that I can see from the scanned image. This is a great shot and one that you should proud of. I'd love to see the print!
