I have (as many others) always been fascinated by the Grande Arche. Its size and terrible symmetry make it a subject easy to photograph, and quite difficult to photograph well. This is my less worst attemptto date... what do you think?

You've managed to catch the spirit and grandeur of the arch. But plus important managed to create a distinct mark by using the people like 'Modigliani statues' placed on the first plan.

6/7a.

Warm regards,

Piu' che Modigliani sembra un uomo di Giacometti!Sono comunque daccordo con chi mi ha preceduto!Salutoni e auguroni Luca!

Mario, Giuseppe, Lex, thank you all very much!

Giuseppe, yes, Giacometti is a good reference, It did not occur to me immediately, but now you mention...

Lex: you might be right. I already think that the sky highlights are a bit too dark, in fact the histogram is essentially empty close to saturation level. On the staircase zone: I suppose you already suspected that there is some layer work going on here. The right "pillar" has its own layer, such as the left one AND the staircase (together) and the "tent" as well. Perhaps I would be better off by doing a selection for the staircase only making it still a tad brighter...

On the "messages" topic, many of them are visible when you consider how the arche is placed with respect to the rest of the city, but still the wanted to (or had to) introduce some further mess than evident detail: although the arche is connected by the avenue Charles de Gaulle with the Arc de Triomphe, its orientation is off by some 6 degrees with respect to that axis (it is quite apparent in google maps). The reason I believe is not totally clear: perhaps technical (plenty of underground structures there, like metro stations), perhaps aesthetic, to show its volume to a person coming on the axis instead of appearing like just a flat square... but I'm sure numerology-oriented minds have spent quite some time thinking about this...

Lex

thanks again. I did try indeed to brighten up the staircase a bit, but the result was not of my liking: the manipulation started to bee a bit too evident. On the other hand, as I anticipated, I brightened up the sky highlights a bit, and I like the result much more.

I uploaded the new version, which should show up now (although I have been told it can take some time before PNet updates?) instead of the old one.

Cheers

L.

The lines and the big and tiny men are great. Just as Lex I tried to play with brightness and contrast but couldn't get it as I liked it. (That was before I read that Lex tried as wel...)

Is miss the metal/glass-ness of the building.

That said, I like the picture!

Luca, just wanted to mention that I'm not sure what happened but most of my critiques on this and other photos vanished sometime in mid to late 2009. I didn't delete them. Apparently just a software glitch.
