there's a overriding feeling of enclosement here despite the fact that he's reading a newspaper, a symbol for a preoccupation with what's going on out there. The half open blinds form a nice paradox to that and could be a metaphor for keeping the world at a comfortable distance. The triangular composition of his hands and covered head, what could be perceived as a rather defensive posture, play right into that feeling of someone who's anxious of what the world is coming to.
