Polarizer + Tripod. In Paintshop, I increased the saturation a little. The slide itself is brilliant from itself due to the rgeat early morning light.

Fantastic shot. Would also love to see the original as my only comment would be that it looks like you have enhanced the colour and thus not as naturally beautiful as could be. But maybe I'm wrong...can't know unless we see the orginal!

Composition, colors, image - breathtaking!

The windmill image made me come and see the rest of work, and I was not disappointed! OUTSTANDING!

Excellent. I like the way nature and man-made are combined here to form an almost mathematical - i.e geometrical - pattern. The colors are also very surprising and nicely striking. Really well done. Possibly my favorite in your folder so far. Best regards.

Looks like I'm the first to congratulate this week ! Great pick... Not only do I love this shot and almost all your work, but I am also glad to see that this is the picture that was picked to represent your talent. I absolutely agree that this your most original upload so far, among many other images which are equally or almost equally beautiful...

I honestly haven't seen many landscapes on this site that strike as much as this one does. The question may be "Is this first viewing pleasure going to stand the test of time ?" Well, I don't know, but it sure grabbed me from the first minute I saw it. Brilliant photography !

To me...kind of an in your face perfect composition. Rule of 1/3's, leading lines, complimenting colors and texture, all very well balanced. So well balanced that it seems mechanical and lacks emotion. I find this photo to be beautiful, but uninteresting after only a few moments of viewing.

Congratulations on POW. I must say, however, after perusing the other images in this folder I am surprised by this choice. This is, to my eye, one of the least appealing of Jaap's images. First, the saturation, as others have pointed out, is a bit over the top: the delicacy and detail of the composition are overwhelmed. Normally I'm a fan of saturation - my favorite film is Reala, perahps the print film equivalent to Velvia - but here I feel the extra saturation detracts. I even like the desaturated version posted above. Second, the graphic part of this image - that is, the lines - and even the composition strike me as a bit cliche. This is a subtle judgement (the ever-elusive 'originality'), though, and is based on personal opinions. All this is not to say that Jaap Hart is not an acomplished photographer; but I would have chosen this one or, more along the same vein as the POW, this winter shot. These, to my eye, are far superior. Best wishes,

Elaine Robbins

Jaap,

When I saw the thumbnail of this shot as POW, my initial response was "Wow - that must be Velvia". I like the fantasy-like look of the oversaturated colors in this case. Based on this shot, I was inspired to look at your portfolio, and it is absolutely amazing. If you get a chance, I'd really like to know how you go about choosing your subjects. Do you "scout" locations periodically to determine when the best light occurs, do you drive around and just hope to find an interesting scene, do you stay pretty much close to home, etc. etc? Whatever you do, it works! Congratulations on POW.

I like the composition, but this colors??? The colors are too much artificial. Could we see something more natural? Thanks

I agree. The colors look real and unreal. Excellent one point perspective diappearing into mist. The bright overcast really makes the colors enhanced

The crisp detail and irridescent light is just fantastic. Such clarity. The elements are all very appealing too: the perspective convergence, mist, canal, chosen placement of trees in the frame. Unfortunately though, I have to agree with others that the over saturation was unnecessary and overpowering. I enjoyed this portfolio of your work Jaap, and see you have a natural eye for composition, and make an effort to shoot at the right time of day for the best possible lighting conditions. It certainly pays - I especially enjoyed 'Winter Windmill' and 'Winter in Holland'. Beautiful work.

Jaap, perhaps you will think that I am being to obvious if I say that this photo is very Dutch. The subject from all your photos in this folder is unmistakably the Netherlands, but this photo is different from the others because shows your country in an essential way, in a very deep way, I think it catches the soul of Holland, going beyond appearances. The abstract values are more important than the flowers or the gracht. You have used colors and composition to get this, both are crisp and defined, with no non sense on it. By being so Dutch, by catching the soul of the Netherlands you are conveying universal values and by photographing a very concrete and material landscape you are being abstract. I think that this POW is very much deserved

I like it, of course, but I cannot give it 7's. It is a bit too slick--even plastic--for me as a portrayal of a scene from reality.
