Skypath 1

fred_wilkinson

I have been interested in skypaths for a couple of years now, ever since I first noticed them, and this is one of hundreds of images taken in a wonderful beech avenue on my property in Cornwall, UK. The trees are closely planted and the sky begins to appear as pathways between them as soon as fall begins, but they look at their best when fall is complete. My guess is that the rubbing of branch tips in the wind inhibits further woody growth but permits the more flexible foliage. The skypaths appear in those places formerly occupied by leaves. I desaturated and marginally strengthened contrast in Photoshop taking care not to lose branch tips, so the image is a pretty natural representation of reality as it appeared to me. What one might read into the pathways is altogether a different matter...I am sometimes tempted to interpret them as initial letters or esoteric symbols!

really incredible. the gentle separation between the trees is amazing and the "flatness" of the silhouette calls to mind capillaries on a microscope slide.

This is a very common composition and I see you have a whole folder full of them. Interesting how the spacing between the trees is quite similar regardless of shooting angle. Care to enlighten us?
