jerrynmnk 0 Posted February 12, 2009 This is the cropped center of a much larger shot. Comments appreciated. Link to comment
jerrynmnk 0 Posted February 12, 2009 This is actually a cropped section of a larger shot, not a macro. What do you think? I increased saturation of reds & yellows a bit. Did I go too far? Link to comment
jonderson 0 Posted February 13, 2009 Jerry, I have a similar shot of the same type of flower in the rotation right now. And while I don't want to say your interpretation of the subject is wrong, I would like to offer reasons why I would not have done what you have done with this shot. Regarding the saturation first, the yellow and reds are indeed more full and rich as a result of the added saturation, but you have as a result also eliminated the brilliant white which is what gives this flower most of its striking power when it comes to contrast. Personally, I have nothing against cropping a close-up to a macro level as long as quality doesn't suffer, and in this case I think that you did fine as far as that goes. In my shot I wanted more of the petals to show, as I thought the red contrasted very nicely with the green in the center and I wanted to show that off. In looking at your shot, I think I should have gotten a little tighter with mine, but I would not have gone in as close as you did unless I was going for a true macro shot of the pollen grains or somesuch. You have some great orchid shots in your portfolio, btw!! Keep up the good work! Link to comment
jerrynmnk 0 Posted February 13, 2009 Hi Jon, Thanks for the critique. I looked at your shot of the same type of flower & I really like it. The one you saw has much more red tones in it and as you said it really does contrast well with the greens. You also have a nice dof so the whole flower is in focus. I appreciate your critique and I will try another version with less saturation and maybe a bit less closely cropped. I just wish I had another version with more dof. Thanks again, Regards, Jerry Link to comment
harlequin 0 Posted February 13, 2009 Jerry, I like it. Nice lines that pull you into the picture. The colors are fine. Cropped or macro what difference does it make if you get the shot and feel. Well done. -- Charles Link to comment
jerrynmnk 0 Posted February 13, 2009 Thanks Charles, I'm glad you like the shot. You seem to have appreciated my original intent of the 3D effect pulling you in... Regards,Jerry Link to comment
