bacsa 0 Posted November 15, 2002 so, tell me about it. (The bottom & right crop is final.) Link to comment
mg 0 Posted May 10, 2003 I think you had a very good idea here, and it works aesthetically, except perhaps for one thing: I'd like this better as a perfect square. Since only the right and bottom crop are final, I'd suggest a crop on the left...:-)Now the only thing that of course spoils quite a bit this portrait is the lack of sharpness. Not sure what caused it, but reshooting this sharp and with a little added contrast would seem to result in a good or very good portrait. Perhaps let his ear in too... Regards. Link to comment
bacsa 0 Posted May 11, 2003 thanks, Marc. I also thought it's a bit "heavy" on the right side, so maybe i'll crop:)more:) Maybe i'll reshoot it, with the following major improvements:*using tripod (now i do have one)instead of table edge;*using cable release(i made one) instead of 10-second selfrelease and run-and-sit tactique:) *using a not-200-speed film (like reala100 or ilford hp5) as Mr. Greenspun heavily suggests; *using aperture far from the f/1.7 limit for better sharpness, contrast and DOF*checking that my ear will fit too;*maybe printing it larger, + on glossy paper, so flatbed-scanning will be better(have no neg. scanner). As you see, i made quite some stupid mistakes, and it's quite a big surprise that you picked this one to comment on. Thanks again. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted May 11, 2003 So, it's a self-portrait ! Why didn'y you say so...? :-)) Why I picked this one ? Because I just looked so far at your portrait folder, and because I like your idea here, and because it had 0 comments. Do I win something...? No ? Ok, wait... Maybe I'll add something then... About the self-made shutter-release cable and the self-timer for the next self-portrait...:-) Eventhough you would use a cable release, I doubt it would make any difference, and for sure you will still have to run and sit - i.e: to use the self timer ! Why ? Because the shutter release releases the shutter ! :-)) Surprised ? I guess not. But what it means is that as soon as you will release the sutter, the light will start to hit the film. You will then NOT be on the chair YET, so the wall will be recorded and by the time you'll reach the chair, if the shutter isn't closed yet you'll be recorded as well. Result: a ghost image, the wall through you, or you in the wall, like a fossil... and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. So, self-timer it is... Do I win something now...? :-) Cheers. Link to comment
