In Chichicastenango (Guatemala), right next to the market, is the

church of St. Thomas. She produces mystery and wonder, and is the

perfect marriage between the Catholic faith and indigenous religious

traditions. Shamans still carry out rituals in the church, which often

include incense, candles, and sometimes the sacrifice of chickens to

honor and pray to the gods. Has 18 steps, one for each month of the

Mayan calendar. The steps of churches fulfill a purpose similar to

that of the major steps of the Mayan pyramids.
