Excellent image Fergus. The frost covered vegetation in the foreground really adds interest to the image. Very nicely composed.

All the best,

Neil

Great image Fergus. After looking at it for a while I feel that the left side (with the higher hill) seems to be a little dark which unbalances the image a little for me.

But it's a great composition and treatment. My compliments, Bill

Do you see ratings as a means to giving feedback or to help win a ratings contest? You seem to know which ratings are invalid so if your concern is simply feedback, simply ignore those ratings you already deem unworthy. You won't have to get worked up over "vile" people. If you are in it for a photo rating constest, you should ask those giving inflated high rankings without critical analysis to stop giving such ratings as well. Of course there is no point in entering in to a "fair" ratings contest as it will never be one.

Thanks for your remark John,

As I have said this is the first time I have mentioned this situation, but what maybe I didnt make clear is that it was not a blast on a self preservation basis, it was on behalf of all quality work by anyone that has taken the time energy to produce great images that we all appreciate. In fact the motivation for my comment was Chip Phillips recent addition which received a 3 mark by guess what a anonymous rater (as is always the case). To say that these people dont do this for some cynical reason is in my mind not being open to the fact that there are some nasty buggers in the world ,this to me is only bourne out by the fact that they hide behind there anonimity(maybe marks should be given by members only).

Anyway the long and the short is that I dont think its pleasant if you dont like something then dont rate it! .Please dont be misunderstood into thinking that i'm trying to gain some ego elevation I really dont like that suggestion considering my motivation is to preserve the integrity of this marking system and give respect and appreciation where its due!

This is just so beautiful, what nature has gifted you and you have captured so elegently. The composition, colours, lighting and the content is just perfect. One of the best photo's I've seen on here in quite some time. Thank you for sharing it.

Warm regards,

Rich

Fergus, while I don't assume any self aggrandizement on your part at all, you might forgive someone for thinking that your ratings request was not designed for the sake of others when your request was associated with your own image and merely asks that such ratings be made "elsewhere". We should all encourage ratings to be made in good faith and avoid making gratutitous deflated and inflated rates. The 'integrity' of the system will always be flawed however.

As to this image, I clicked on it as the thumbnail version alone was striking and I think its one of your best. While the image might have turned out as routine for seasoned photographers under normal conditions, you certainly were served well by being at the right place at the right time and the effort to be there then through all the cold ect. was worth it. The lead in of the icicled foreground proves quite interesting.

love it!! the ice crystals are beautiful and the sky color provides a unique feel to the image. all put together with great touch. a fine shot indeed.

Fantastic interest in the ice crystals and colour but what stands out to me is how integrated the whole shot feels, given that there's essentially no mid-ground. You've done a great job with that.

cheers,

John
