Cape Cod Windmill

Strong image, good exposure and fine comp - usually the tight captures veer towards awkwardness, not so here. Surprisingly good dof, not sure about the plaque - as colour relief it's perfect, just dubious about the print.

 

The detail on the sails is fabulous, I especially like the way the top guy veers off into the deep blue heavens like a stepladder - and in another sense reminiscent of an antenna.

 

The shadow is a real boon - giving the impression of a third sail. Aesthetically it's a little cold given the time of shooting and use of CPL, but I doubt you could have pulled this off - with that much detail - in warmer late or early light. Maybe the sign is out of place (i coudnt read it), but the composition and colours are great

Well, I've been wondering how on earth I managed to screw up the focus on the plaque since I verrrry carefully set up this shot, (with judicious use of autofocus.) I looked at the slide, the raw scan, the cleaned scan, the jpeg, and the print...and even reprinted it, and I can say with conviction "Hallelulia, brothers and sisters, it is indeed in focus!" I guess I should have sharpened more before converting to jpeg for upload...but I just never know where to stop - i.e., where's the fine line between not enough and too much. Now I can cancel my eye dr. appt. ;-)

Oh right - the plaque...it says "Judah Baker Windmill. Built 1791. Restored 1974-1999."
