Matt Laur 2,201 Posted October 20, 2008 My first reaction to this is that it's a bit rudderless. You're making the pear leaf your focus, but that leaf doesn't feel connected to a sense of narrative possibility in the scene... even the pear of which it's a part is out of focus. If you stopped down just a hair more or moved your focal point back just a bit, the foreground fruit would feel more wholly central. The composition might also beneift from being a little less spread out. Can't quite tell if I'm seeing tomatos or apples in the background, but it can really help if the overall scene providing a sense of direction or possibility (about to fix a meal? saying something about a change of season? preaching simplicity, or opulence?). None of which should be confused with discouragement! This is such a useful exercise - it helps you to see how DoF plays on these shapes, and what the light is doing. A little rule-of-thirds placement practice might help with the overall sense of balance. Your best bet: shoot about 100 of these while continually moving the objects, the light sources, and your camera position. Then walk away from it for 24 hours, coming back to look at the collection of images as a whole. You'll be shocked how quickly one or two images jump out at you - even if you're not immediately sure why. Study those, and then go about improving on them. Link to comment
