Very good context to support the breeding grounds. Excellent colors and rendition of the natural environment.

My first impression was that it seemed a little busy. However, it quickly became interesting and then attractive. I think you captured a great moment here. Thanks for sharing it.

Another shot from Bonaventure Island. I conceptualized this shot and went there looking for it. I thought I got the shot at the time and didn't see the other bird in the background with its wings raised until I got the slide back.

Do you find the composition too busy? Or is busy the point? Thanks for your input.

Kenneth,

This makes me want to be a bird.

Question: Is there a compelling reason you used Fuji Sensia 100 rather than your usual Velvia 50 for this shoot?

I think it makes more sense to use Sensia because it is ISO-100. Of course, you can still use Velvia but you have to push-process to make it work and some labs charge extra for pushing.

Kenneth:Again I marvel at the fact that 1/15 second captured all the details without movement blur. I think the business is the idea here. I love to look at each of the birds in turn. Another wonderful Kwan Kapture.

Not too busy. After all it's a bird colony, so it must be busy. I like that all the birds are just sitting

with the exception of the one with the head up, and blur at the wing tips is ok to enhance the still/motion

contrast. It would be also better if the bird at the left had wings down (thus leaving the first bird the only

contrast in composition).

I decided to shoot Sensia here for its lower contrast. Due to the boat schedule to this island, I had to shoot at noon, in the worst light possible. While the colours of Velvia would have been nice, its higher contrast would have obliterated much detail in the white feathers. Arthur also made a good point. The extra stop of Sensia makes a big difference when shooting anything that moves.

The first time I looked at this image, I felt it was too busy. Now, after looking at this a few more times, I like it. I don't think I am treating this as a bird shot any more. I am just seeing color and pattern...the cool color of the shady side of the birds and the blue ocean and sky; the repeated white and yellow color. Very nice shot.

what, too busy? are you serious? no way. It's a bunch of birds. Any "busyness" among the birds is an integral part of the scene. And you caught this frame and a wonderful time to catch the central bird in mid stretch. fantastic!

I am impressed that you were able to conceive of the shot and go and make it. This is one aspect of the art of photography that I would like to hear more from you in regards to. To me that is what makes this image so beautiful, the both and, the hand of the photographer and the unpredictability of nature which we can never fully control.

This is BBC1, Stay tuned as David Attenborough presents the new series, Sea Birds.

(I can imagine hearing this if I saw this photo on TV...well done)

These are busy birds after all. I very much enjoy your work. It is full of rich colours, active and well composed. My only criticism is how do I find a standout shot when they are ALL standout shots. I would love to see you try portraiture!

I have seen all your work in the portfolio thus far, and I must tell you that this is the first one that I have commented on. Your work is astounding. Really it is. I am amazed at the level of clarity in all your pics. Do you ever take a bad picture? Seriously? It always seems as if nature saves it's special moments for your lens, because you manage to capture them perfectly everytime. In my eyes anyway. You have an awesome porfolio. I look forward to seeing some of your work in some coffetable literature in my home one day.. I think that is the best compliment to a photographer. To be shared in a book of works with other great photographers. Because you are a great photographer. You have a definite style that not only attracts, but holds attention. I too admire your ability to forsee the frame that you intended to capture and then work w/ what nature gave you to produce this masterpiece. Work well done. I applaud you.
