This is a great photo and deserves to be taken seriously . . . . . .

Does the thumbnail suggest a joker to anyone . . . board as face, surfer as hat :-) . . . . . oh never mind.

Vuk -

It's a pretty standard surf photo techinique. You have a camera in a water housing that often sits on a grip stick with trigger. You swim out into the lineup with the surfers, place yourself precariously in the wave (occasionally getting sucked over the falls and dashed on coral reef), and stick your hand out of the water as the surfer goes by, all while maneuvering within the wave so as to not get run over/sucked over.

David, and other surf photogs, make it look easy.

Jason, your pretty close with your description of my technique of getting this shot. But to get this angle I had to actually bodysurf behind the surfer. This shot is actually the fourth shot in a five shot sequence. And yes I got rolled and hit the bottom, but luckily it was sand bottom.

This photo makes me feel that, as a "photographer", I would not cross the beginners stage never. I feel that I should stay as a fan. That´s art! 7/7

Well done David, this shot is sensational and I agree with your peers, this shot does push out the boundaires of surf photography. The border and the cross processing makes the image all the better. With regards to the comments from Trevor Hopkins 'blocked-up shadow detail', perhaps you should have got a few of your mates to body surf through the tube next to you holding lighting, reflectors, and softboxes!

this is exactly what i want to be doing with photography, all your work is excellent. better than most of what i see in surfer, you have an eye for art in form. brilliant.

Oooh, what coloring. He looks like an icebreaker (that is the idea, right?) I would reconsider the purple around the frame; how about an appropriate green?

This is a very cool image indeed. Strong lines and great effect from the cross processing. Just one person's opinion, of course, but I find the color of the border distracting. It pulls my eye away from the action of the image. Overall excellent work, though. Enjoy.

A first class sports reportage given the difficulties invovled. Choice of super wide angle lens is wise !

Only on word, DEEP, the surfer is deep, Dave is way deep! This is an awesome shot Dave full props go your way. I really like the cross-processing, nice to see some chances being taken in surf photography. I know from experience just how hard and how many poundings you must have taken to get it. I've just picked up 15mm fisheye and just have to get enough cash for a housing and port for my EOS 5 and I'm back out there. You shot has inspired me to work harder and get back out there. Thanks mate!!

This is truly wondreful and it is definitely more challenging than my "cats on a sofa" images. I cannot imagine how you would film this. Can you explain how you set up to take this image. Where do you place the tripod? Details man! I want details.

Later I intend to set up my GI Joe on a surfboard in my bathtub to try to recreate this shot.

7/7

Great shot! Would you mind going into a bit more detail about the cross-processing bit? I've not seen it done before. What effect does it have (ie. how is this different from a straight develop of the same photo?)

The cross-processing is great. It reminds me of an ice cave in a glacier; quite the visual treat.

Great shot. We are there! Technical is great, esp. via C-41. Composition gives us depth and a clear perception of what it is like to be under the curl. Great photography.

Cheers,

Alan.
