david_troyer 0 Posted October 7, 2002 Hi, This is my first request for a critique. This image was published in Transworld surf in Sept 2002 and has been regarded by my peers as a cutting edge water shot. I would love to have professionals in other fields of photography judge it. Thank You, David Troyer Link to comment
simon_hodgson 0 Posted October 7, 2002 Dave, This photo is bloody amazing!! I am a surfer/photographer myself and realise just how difficult this shot would have been. I love it!! Link to comment
werner.karl 0 Posted October 7, 2002 shot ! Must have been quite difficult to do this -- how many pics did you shoot to get thus one ? Link to comment
david_troyer 0 Posted October 7, 2002 After thinking about how I wanted to get this image it took about a year and a half and about 20 rolls to nail it without water spots on the lens and the right comp. Link to comment
matt_boutet 0 Posted October 7, 2002 David, amazing shot! I can't help but think about how many times you must've been sucked over the falls to get this shot. It was worth it. Link to comment
dan_jenkins 0 Posted October 9, 2002 dave's ego can only be exceeded by the ability it took to take this shot. Link to comment
wjm 0 Posted October 10, 2002 As a rank amateur surfer and photographer, I can't even imagine shooting this. Link to comment
Timo Hartikainen 556 Posted October 10, 2002 To a person like me, who has never tried surfing or photographed it, especially in this way, this gives a wonderful feeling. I like this pic very much. With this new rating system..I think I just gave my first double seven ratings. Link to comment
chris_rock 0 Posted October 10, 2002 This is awesome man. Can't really say anything else about it. I'm in awe. Link to comment
ivanskavinsky 0 Posted October 10, 2002 Total stunner in every respect. But I would have prefered it if...JUST Kidding! Link to comment
jed goode 0 Posted October 10, 2002 Love the framing, the colours, the dynamic feel. I have to say that this must be one of the best surfing images I have ever seen, certainly the best tube shot. Link to comment
ashley_hosten 0 Posted October 11, 2002 You are to surfers what Chris Benton is to kites. And that, is some praise. Link to comment
luciano_checco 0 Posted October 11, 2002 After all the efforts you've done, you deserve "bravo!" Link to comment
david_troyer 0 Posted October 11, 2002 To everyone who has given me such nice comments, I really appreciate it very much! Link to comment
root 0 Posted October 11, 2002 I applaud your effort and the composition. Just wondering why the cross processing? Link to comment
trevor_hopkins 0 Posted October 11, 2002 The water is superbly done, and I've certainly never seen this shot attempted before. But then I don't read surfing magazines... The only area for improvement I can see is the surfer himself, who appears to be an uncharacteristically conservative example of his species as far as fashion sense is concerned. I just think some yellows or reds on the board or his clothes would add even more punch to an already stunning image. It's also a pity he is under-exposed, with blocked-up shadow detail, although his pose certainly adds to the dynamism of the image. Since this is a labour of love for you, you could always try again with a more funky friend... Lastly, I don't think the frame does the picture any favours - it looks like the print's been handled by someone eating beetroots. All in all though, it's an impressive photo! Link to comment
david_troyer 0 Posted October 11, 2002 Carl, this particular day was cloudy and the lighting was poor but the waves were perfect for this angle. I didn't want to shoot it in b/w so I figured the only way to get some color was to cross process it. pretty much an experiment that paid off. Link to comment
dan_peffer 0 Posted October 12, 2002 This shot is great. I am inspired by it. Thankyou for posting it for us to enjoy. dan Link to comment
vuk_vuksanovic 0 Posted October 21, 2002 This is certainly the best surfing action photo I have ever seen. You say you used a 15mm lens--this would have put you within a few feet of the surfer. Could you provide more details about it? Link to comment
