michael_ward1 0 Posted October 4, 2002 Alex, This is a wonderful cloud image. So much better, knowing what it meant to those in the area. I think you could crop out more on the bottom, and maybe just a bit on the top. To clone out the noise, clone into a separate layer, and make sure that the "use all layers" box is checked. My guess is that you were cloning into a layer, did the initial selection from the primary layer or background, then cloned into a separate layer. The next time you tried to do a selection you were in the empty layer and there was nothing to copy if "use all layers" was not checked. Link to comment
1000wordsphotography 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Clouds are one of my favorite things to shoot. I really like this one. I still think "grounding" isn't absolutely needed but I am in the minority on that. Lots of shades of color here. Very interesting shot. I find my eye searching for that patch of blue. kkwan 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Very good light and effective composition. I really like this shot. The framing at the top by that dark band of cloud really works. The triangular shape of the brightly lit part of the clouds is really cool. This shot works beautifully as a pure sky shot. There is no need to include the ground. Link to comment
peterneibert 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Great image -- wouldn't change a thing. The bottom of the light triangle gives it all the grounding and balance it needs. Link to comment
alex marsaud 0 Posted October 5, 2002 The reason why I decided not to crop out the top of the trees is because I thought it echoed fairly well the darkest cloud at the very top. It wasn't for a grounding reason as much as it was for an aesthetic one. But you might feel like there is too much unecessary dead space between the bottom of the "triangle" and the top of the trees. And also this lighter cloud in the mid-right part of the pic shouldn't be here? And BTW, keep commenting constructively the way u do, it really helps me "see" my pics and the others' better and more clearly. I feel like I've improved in many ways since I joined the circle. Keep it up! Cheers, Alex Link to comment
waynemorgan 0 Posted October 5, 2002 I hope you can get the noise out of this one, Alex. This is a great photo. It really caught my eye Link to comment
fred_j._lord 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Alex:The mood is nice but it definitely needs to be spotted. The noise and dust spots are a very great distraction. I think I should have allowed the trees to show just a bit more as well. Link to comment
michael_ward1 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Alex, I did not know that there were trees at all until you mentioned them. When I brought this picture into PS and brightened it, I could see the composition as you intended it, and it is spectacular. The trees do indeed balance the dark clouds at the top. I suspect this picure was done in by the web gamut. Link to comment
stephen_lau1 0 Posted October 5, 2002 Not until I opened this image in PS that I noticed that there are a lot of details were lost viewing at Photonet. I like the mood of this shot but you do have to play more attention to clean up the dust spots. By reducing the contrast a bit, this shot opened up nicely revealing the beautiful landscape buried due to too much contrast. In addition, I cropped part of the dark cloud off at top to get better balance. I like the idea of including the dark ground to give more perscpective and support. Link to comment
alex marsaud 0 Posted October 10, 2002 It wasn't darkened in PS and the point-and-shoot camera did all the job for me. I guess it's a screen thing, as on my lap top the image really pops out, but on my work desktop it looks all too dark... As far as composition is concerned, more trees would indeed help I think, but I wouldn't crop out the top part of the top cloud. And Stephen your version doesn't seem to convey the original atmosphere: there's a too apparent green cast, which looses the yellowish tones.. Link to comment
